GDP per capita in Ethiopia
Ethiopia - GDP per capita (U.S. Dollars)Economic conditions have likely worsened in Q2 FY 2021 (8 July 2021–7 July 2022), as the country teeters on the brink of all-out war. The Tigray conflict has continued to escalate in recent weeks with the government carrying out two air strikes in the region, targeting a training site and a manufacturing facility belonging to rebel forces. Meanwhile, a six-month nationwide state of emergency was announced on 2 November, giving the government the power to impose curfews, establish roadblocks and disrupt transportation. This came amid rising tensions as allied rebel forces gathered around the capital, Addis Ababa. Against this backdrop, on 10 November S&P Global Ratings downgraded the country’s rating to ‘CCC’ from ‘CCC+’ with a negative outlook. Meanwhile, the government recently detained several UN workers for interfering with the Tigray conflict, threatening backlash from the international community.
