Rice prices averaged USD 488 per metric ton in June, up 14.3% from May. On 30 June, the commodity traded at USD 497 per metric ton, up 4.0% from 29 May.
In June, rice prices rose for the third consecutive month—reaching a 17-month high—on elevated energy and fertilizer costs amid the Iran war plus mounting supply fears due to the onset of El Niño. The latter is set to result in weaker monsoon rainfall across India and Southeast Asia and dent supply in turn.
