Peru: Merchandise exports contract in August
Merchandise exports were broadly stable falling just 0.2% annually in August (July: -5.5% year-on-year). Meanwhile, merchandise imports climbed 25.7% on an annual basis in August (July: +20.5% yoy), marking the strongest result since January 2022.
As a result, the merchandise trade balance improved from the previous month, recording a USD 0.3 billion surplus in August (July 2022: USD 0.0 billion deficit; August 2021: USD 1.4 billion surplus). Lastly, the trend deteriorated, with the 12-month trailing merchandise trade balance recording a USD 13.5 billion surplus in August, compared to the USD 14.6 billion surplus in July.
