Kenya: Inflation rises to over an over five-year high in August
Inflation inched up to 8.5% in August from July’s 8.3%. August’s reading represented the highest inflation rate since June 2017. Looking at the details of the release, the acceleration was chiefly due to prices for food and non-alcoholic beverages rising at a quicker pace in August.
Accordingly, the trend pointed up slightly, with annual average inflation coming in at 6.6% in August (July: 6.4%).
Lastly, consumer prices rose a seasonally-adjusted 0.42% from the previous month in August, which was below July’s 0.67% rise. August’s result marked the weakest reading since February.
