Italy: Inflation hits over two-year high in May

Consumer prices flatlined in May, coming in below April's 0.39% increase. May's result marked the lowest reading since November 2020. The reading reflected a softer rise in food and non-alcoholic beverages prices being offset by a sharper fall in prices for recreation and culture.

Inflation accelerated to 1.3% in May, following April’s 1.1%. May's result marked the highest inflation rate since November 2018. Accordingly, the trend pointed up mildly, coming in at 0.1% in May, after flatlining in April. Lastly, harmonized inflation ticked up to 1.2% in May, from April’s 1.0%.

FocusEconomics panelists expect harmonized inflation to average 1.1% in 2021, which is up 0.1 percentage points from the previous month’s projection. For 2022, panelists expect harmonized inflation to average 1.0%.
