Italy: Economic growth moderates in Q4

In the fourth quarter of this year, GDP grew 0.1% over the previous quarter in seasonally- and working-day adjusted terms, according to an advance estimate released by the National Statistics Office (ISTAT) on 12 February. The result came in slightly below the 0.2% growth tallied in Q3 and undershot the stronger 0.3% growth that markets had expected. It also marked the lowest reading in a year. More detailed data will be released on 4 March.

In annual terms, GDP grew 1.0% in Q4, which was above the 0.8% rise observed in Q3 and marked the fastest expansion since Q2 2011.

The Bank of Italy expects the economy to expand 1.5% in 2016. FocusEconomics Consensus Forecast panelists see the economy expanding 0.8% in 2016, which is unchanged from last month’s forecast. For 2017, panelists expect the economy to expand 1.2%.

    The National Institute of Statistics (Istat) composite business confidence indicator (IESE, Istat Economic Sentiment Indicator)—which covers the manufacturing, construction, services and retail sectors—slipped to 108.8 points in November, a slight decrease from October’s multi-year high of 109.1 points. The weakening came mainly on the back of a deterioration in sentiment on the retail trade sector, in which both the assessments on current sales and the expectations on future sales worsened.
