Consumer sentiment stays stable in May, remains below long-term average
Consumer sentiment came in at 83.0 in May, unchanged from April. As a result, the index remained entrenched below the 100-point long-term average, signaling sustained pessimism among consumers.
Sentiment improved regarding the living standards in France over the next 12 months and unemployment prospects. Moreover, households’ sentiment regarding their financial situation in the next 12 months also improved. That said, these improvements were offset by deeper concerns about future inflation worsening significantly, as well as a decline in current and expected saving capacity.
