Costa Rica: Inflation ticks down in October

November 7, 2018

Consumer prices rose 0.37% in October compared to the previous month, up from the 0.22% increase in September. According to the National Institute of Statistics and Census (INEC), October’s price rise came primarily on the back of more expensive transport. Weighing on prices, however, were lower prices for food and non-alcoholic beverages.

Inflation was lower at 2.0% in October, down from 2.2% in September, and just touching the lower bound of the Central Bank’s 2.0%–4.0% target range. Higher prices for transport underpinned the inflation figure in October, while lower prices for clothing and footwear weighed it down somewhat. Annual average inflation was unchanged in October, at 2.3%.

FocusEconomics Consensus Forecast panelists expect inflation to end this year at 3.3%, which is unchanged from last month's forecast. In 2019, the panel sees inflation ending the year at 3.5%, which is up 0.1 percentage points from last month’s forecast.
