Moldova - Inflation

Following Q2’s impressive growth, early indicators suggest that positive dynamics carried over into Q3. Despite easing from the previous quarter, industrial output expanded solidly in July–August. This, coupled with strong merchandise imports in the same period and a marked rebound in retail sales in August, hints at healthy domestic demand. In other news, on 8 October, the European Commission disbursed EUR 50 million to help the country tackle the fallout from the pandemic. Moreover, on 21 October, Moldova and the IMF reached a provisional agreement for a USD 564 million loan over the next 40 months, boding well for activity ahead. Less positively, on 22 October, the country declared a state of emergency over critically low pressure in its gas pipelines, amid a pending contract settlement with Gazprom. In response, the EU approved a EUR 60 million grant to help the country buy gas.
