Slovakia - Current Account (billions of Euros)

Growth marginally picked up in the first quarter, on the back of buoyant external sector. Domestically, lackluster expenditure weighed on growth, however: Household spending growth fell to an almost five-year low, amid higher inflation and downbeat consumer sentiment, while fixed investment lost stride owing to completed projects in the auto sector. Turning to Q2, tailwinds to growth appear to have softened. In April, a tepid rebound in retail sales and lingering pessimism among households hints that consumption remained frail, while slower construction activity points to cooling capital investment. On the supply-side, industrial production posted solid gains in April, although a downward trend in new orders since the start of the year could take its toll ahead. Meanwhile, the trade balance posted the first deficit of the year in April amid surprisingly slow merchandise export growth.
