Netherlands: Consumer confidence plumbs new depths
Consumer confidence came in at minus 51.0 in July, down from June’s minus 50.0. July’s result marked a record low for a series that began in 1986. This indicates the deepest level of pessimism among consumers since the measurement began.
The fall was driven by an all-time low in consumers’ sentiment about the economy, as well as their willingness to buy. Furthermore, while their assessment of their personal financial situation in the past twelve months stayed the same, they grew more pessimistic about their financial situation in the next twelve months. At the same time, consumers were slightly less gloomy about the economy over the next twelve months.
