Italy: Business confidence falls in December

The National Institute of Statistics (Istat) composite business confidence indicator (IESE, Istat Economic Sentiment Indicator), which covers the manufacturing, construction, service and retail sectors, fell from a revised 107.1 in November (previously reported: 107.0) to 105.8 in December. The reading marked a four-month low.

Three of the four categories decreased compared to the previous month. The construction and retail sectors recorded the most significant decreases, while the services sector improved and reached its highest value since June 2007.

Panelists expect fixed investment to increase 0.8% in 2016, which is down 0.1 percentage points from last month’s forecast. For 2017, panelists see fixed investment growing 2.1%.
