GDP in Nicaragua
Nicaragua - GDPThe economy continues to grow at a canter, according to March’s monthly economic activity index (IMAE), driven by the fishing and mining sectors. In addition, the labor market remains dynamic, as evidenced by rising employment and real wages so far this year. However, the tourism sector has had a soft start to 2017. Both the average duration of stay and spending per person fell slightly in the first quarter, although this was likely influenced by a late Easter. The widening Social Security Institute (INSS) deficit is a more serious concern. This issue was recently singled out by the IMF following a staff visit, with the Fund recommending a battery of measures, such as hiking the retirement age, raising contribution rates and reducing costs in order to shore up the system.
