GDP in Lebanon
Lebanon - GDPThe expected approval of the budget will mark another step towards the stabilization of Lebanon’s battered economy. After weeks of disputes, the Lebanese cabinet is set to present the final draft of the budget to parliament, with the country managing to agree on a fiscal plan for the first time in twelve years. A large salary hike for public sector employees has been at the core of the disputes, along with planned tax increases to offset the additional expenditure. While the plan’s approval would be a success for the new government, business representatives have been criticizing it harshly, stating it could jeopardize the timid economic recovery seen in the past months. The budget could also clear the way for the cabinet to pass the electoral law, which in turn should allow for elections in May.
