GDP in Lebanon
Lebanon - GDPLebanese lawmakers are running short on time to approve a new electoral law that will prevent parliament’s term from being extended for a third time running. Although officials had made laudable progress in recent months to put an end to years of political deadlock, hopes for a smooth transition have now run aground. The debate over the new electoral law has heated in recent weeks, with rival officials going so far as to threaten civil war if the new law does not achieve consensus across the sectarian political spectrum. With the parliament slated to meet on 15 May to extend its term, economic policymaking has been put on the backburner, which is allowing economic issues—including structural deficiencies in the electric grid and dwindling disposable income—to fester.
