GDP in Lebanon
Lebanon - GDPOn 27 March, Lebanon’s cabinet approved its first budget in 12 years, which is now to be presented to parliament. Although this marks another step towards the political and economic stabilization of the battered country, the budget has not won over many Lebanese citizens. A long-belated measure to raise public employees’ salaries is expected to be financed through the levying of multiple taxes, most notorious of which is a one percentage point increase in the value-added tax approved in mid-March. This has prompted protests among citizens and firms alike, who argue that higher taxes will hinder the country’s weak economic recovery. The budget also falls short of properly addressing crucial structural reforms, most pressingly the need to reduce the vast electricity bill.
