GDP in Laos
Laos - GDPGDP growth likely moderated slightly last year as a result of the lull in global trade, lower commodity prices and unfavorable weather conditions, which hurt the all-important agriculture sector. Laos should nevertheless still have remained one of the fastest-growing countries in the region. In a recent staff visit, the IMF praised the government for the country’s strong macroeconomic performance and progress on poverty reduction despite last year’s headwinds. However, the Fund also stressed the need to resume fiscal consolidation, increase exchange rate flexibility and instill greater financial sector supervision. These reforms should help the country shield its economy from risks such as a regional slowdown and tighter global monetary conditions.
