In March, the ISTAT manufacturing sentiment index picked up to 92.1 points, from the revised 91.7 points recorded in February (previously reported: 91.5 points). The figure defied market expectations, which saw sentiment dropping to 91.5 points. The reading marked the first increase after three consecutive declines, which had dragged business confidence in February to its lowest level in over a year. According to ISTAT, the improvement reflected better expectations for orders and production, while all the other subcomponents were either unchanged or deteriorated compared to the previous month.
