Steel (USA) prices averaged USD 806 per metric ton in September, down 3.1% from August. On 30 September, the commodity traded at USD 800 per metric ton, up 0.9% from 29 August.
Prices declined for the second consecutive month, with steel among only two base metals to see a price drop in September. The decline was due to subdued demand, as surveys showed weaker improvements in U.S. manufacturing conditions in September vs August. Meanwhile, domestic production declined, likely cushioning the price fall.
