Cotton prices averaged USD 66.19 cents per pound in May, unchanged from April. On 30 May, the commodity traded at USD 65.06 cents per pound, down 1.1% from 30 April.
Cotton prices in May remained close to this year’s average seen so far, capped by weak demand and rising trade uncertainty. Improving crop conditions in the U.S. plus lower oil prices—which make polyester, a cotton substitute, cheaper—further weighed on prices. Still, easing China-U.S. trade tensions aided prices.
