Harmonized inflation drops to lowest level since April in December

Harmonized inflation dropped to 8.2% in December below November’s 9.0%. December's reading marked the lowest inflation rate since April. The decline was driven by moderating price pressures for transportation and housing and utilities. Moreover, prices for recreation grew at a more subdued pace.

The trend pointed up mildly, with annual average harmonized inflation coming in at 8.1% in December (November: 7.9%). Meanwhile, consumer price inflation fell to 8.2% in December, from the previous month's 8.9%.

Lastly, harmonized consumer prices fell 0.26% in December over the previous month, swinging from November's 0.17% increase. December's result marked the weakest reading since January.

FocusEconomics analysts expect harmonized inflation to average 5.8% in 2023, which is up 0.4 percentage points from last month’s forecast, and 2.6% in 2024.
