Switzerland: Inflation accelerates in August from July
Latest reading: Consumer prices were up 0.8% on a year-on-year basis in August, following a 0.4% rise in the previous month. August’s reading was the strongest since September 2024, but still in line with the Central Bank’s target of below 2.0% and mild compared to neighbors—Euro area inflation clocked over 3% in the same month.
Relative to the previous month’s figures, there were higher price pressures for housing and energy (+2.0% on a year-on-year basis vs +1.4% in July), transportation (+2.7% vs +0.8% in July) and food and non-alcoholic beverages (-1.1% vs -1.3% in July). Finally, the variation in restaurants and hotels prices was the same as in the prior month (+0.5% in August and July).
Meanwhile, core consumer prices rose 0.4% in annual terms in August, following a 0.3% increase in the previous month.
Finally, consumer prices rose 0.37% in August on a month-on-month basis, following a 0.09% decline in the prior month.
