Latest reading: Economic sentiment fell to 94.2 in May, following April’s 94.3. The latest reading was below the long-term average of 100, pointing to a muted near-term outlook for the economy.
In May, sentiment darkened in the industrial sector (-0.9 vs +3.4 in April). On the flipside, sentiment turned more upbeat in the construction sector (-2.7 vs -4.3 in April), the services sector (+7.5 vs +2.8 in April), the retail sector (+0.1 vs -2.5 in April) and among consumers (-23.9 vs -25.4 in April).
