Latest reading: Economic sentiment declined to 99.6 in August, following July’s 100.1. The latest reading was below the long-term average of 100, pointing to a muted near-term outlook for the economy.
In August, sentiment darkened in the retail sector (-1.5 vs -0.3 in July) and among consumers (-13.9 vs -12.1 in July). In contrast, sentiment improved in the industrial sector (-15.0 vs -15.2 in July), the construction sector (-15.3 vs -15.7 in July) and the services sector (-2.4 vs -2.9 in July).
