Peru: Inflation accelerates in August from July
Latest reading: Consumer prices in Lima rose 4.4% in annual terms in August, following a 4.1% increase in the previous month. August’s reading came in above market expectations and was the strongest since September 2023.
Higher vehicle fuel prices and a 4.0% hike in residential electricity tariffs were the main factors pushing up inflation.
Relative to the prior month’s figures, there were higher price pressures for food and beverages (+3.9% in annual terms vs +3.5% in July), transport (+14.8% vs +14.3% in July), clothing (+1.7% vs +1.5% in July) and housing and utilities (+3.1% vs +1.3% in July). Finally, the variation in recreation and entertainment prices was the same as in the prior month (+2.2% in August and July).
Finally, consumer prices in Lima increased 0.07% in August in month-on-month terms, following a 0.29% rise in the prior month.
