Latest reading: Economic sentiment dropped to 89.5 in May, following April’s 89.6. The latest reading was below the long-term average of 100, pointing to a muted near-term outlook for the economy.
In May, sentiment darkened in the construction sector (-8.3 vs -8.0 in April) and among consumers (-15.5 vs -14.3 in April). However, sentiment improved in the industrial sector (-14.3 vs -15.8 in April), the services sector (+7.9 vs +6.7 in April) and the retail sector (+6.1 vs +2.4 in April).
