Latest reading: Economic sentiment increased to 89.5 in May, following April’s 88.1. The latest reading was below the long-term average of 100, pointing to a muted near-term outlook for the economy.
In May, sentiment brightened in the industrial sector (-11.0 vs -12.2 in April) and the services sector (-1.6 vs -8.8 in April). However, sentiment worsened in the construction sector (-13.5 vs -12.6 in April), the retail sector (-15.9 vs -7.0 in April) and among consumers (-20.0 vs -19.8 in April).
