Latest reading: Economic sentiment went up to 96.5 in May, following April’s 96.0. The latest reading was below the long-term average of 100, pointing to a muted near-term outlook for the economy.
In May, sentiment brightened in the industrial sector (-1.9 vs -2.3 in April), the services sector (+19.1 vs +18.4 in April), the retail sector (+13.5 vs +13.2 in April) and among consumers (-14.6 vs -15.0 in April). In contrast, sentiment darkened in the construction sector (-17.0 vs -16.0 in April).
