Spain: Unemployment rate rises in first quarter of 2024

The jobless rate rose to 12.3% in Q1 2024 from Q4 2023’s 11.8%. In absolute terms, the number of unemployed workers increased by 117,000 people to 3.0 million in Q1.

Moreover, jobs were shed in Q1. The services sector shed jobs (-56,100), as did the industrial (-38,500), construction (-17,500) and agricultural (-27,600) sectors. Overall, a total of 139,700 jobs were lost from the prior quarter in Q1. For its part, the workforce fell by 22,700 people in Q1 to a total of 24.2 million.
