Netherlands: Consumer confidence is stable in May

Consumer sentiment in the Netherlands was stable at minus 3 in May from the prior month, matching the long-term average of minus 3 over the last 20 years.

Underlying data revealed the stable reading reflected a slight improvement in consumers’ views on the economic climate while their willingness to part ways with their cash was stable. Views on the economic situation edged up on the back of fractionally less pessimism regarding the economic situation in the next 12 months; the outlook on the economic climate in the past 12 months edged down marginally but remained optimistic. Consumers’ willingness to buy was stable as their views on the financial situation in the past 12 months deteriorated while the outlook on the financial situation in the next 12 months improved slightly, as did their consideration that the current time is well suited to purchase big ticket items.
