Malaysia: Inflation increases to over one-year high in August
Inflation rose to 4.7% in August, following July’s 4.4%. August’s figure marked the highest inflation rate since April 2021. Looking at the details of the release, prices for food and non-alcoholic beverages increased at a quicker rate in August and prices for housing and utilities increased. Meanwhile, transportation price growth moderated.
The trend pointed up slightly, with annual average inflation coming in at 3.0% in August (July: 2.8%).
Finally, consumer prices rose a seasonally-adjusted 0.23% in August over the previous month, a smaller increase than the 0.39% rise recorded in July. August’s result marked the weakest reading since August 2021.
