Japan: Inflation ebbs in April from March
Latest reading: Consumer prices rose 1.4% on a year-on-year basis in April, following a 1.5% rise in the previous month.
Relative to the prior month’s data, there were reduced price pressures for housing (+0.8% on a year-on-year basis vs +1.0% in March), transportation (+1.5% vs +2.1% in March) and food (+3.5% vs +3.6% in March). In contrast, price pressures were higher for energy in April (-3.9% vs -5.7% in March).
Meanwhile, core consumer prices were up 1.4% on a year-on-year basis in April, following a 1.8% rise in the previous month.
Lastly, consumer prices were up 0.28% in April in month-on-month terms, following a 0.44% rise in the previous month.
