Japan: Consumer confidence improves but remains pessimistic in April

Consumer confidence rose to 33.0 in April from March’s 32.8. Despite the uptick, the index remained entrenched below the 50-threshold, pointing to continued pessimism among consumers.

The rise came on the back of an improvement in consumers’ views of employment opportunities. In contrast, consumers’ views of their income growth deteriorated.
