Australia: Consumer confidence falls and remains pessimistic in August

The Westpac-Melbourne Institute consumer sentiment index came in at 81.0 in August, down from July’s 81.3. As such, the index remained below the 100-threshold, signaling that consumers were pessimistic.

Consumers’ views over the economic outlook in the next 12 months deteriorated in August, more than offsetting improved views of family finances.
