Argentina: Inflation accelerates in May from the prior month

Latest reading: Consumer prices rose 33.2% in annual terms in May, following a 32.4% rise in the prior month. May’s reading was the strongest since August 2025.

Relative to the prior month’s data, there were higher price pressures for transportation (+42.1% in annual terms vs +39.9% in April), food and non-alcoholic beverages (+33.4% vs +30.9% in April) and housing and utilities (+48.0% vs +47.8% in April). In contrast, price pressures reduced for restaurants and hotels in May (+37.3% vs +39.0% in April).

More encouragingly, consumer prices increased 2.15% in May in month-on-month terms, lower than a 2.58% increase in the prior month and below market expectations. Core prices also rose by less in May than in April.
