Argentina: Consumer confidence drops at year-end

January 4, 2021

The Universidad Torcuato di Tella (UTDT) consumer confidence index decreased from 40.9 in November to 39.3 in December. Therefore, the index moved further below the 50-threshold that separates optimism from pessimism among consumers.

Consumers were more pessimist over their current and future financial situation, and over general economic conditions ahead. On the other hand, households’ willingness to purchase big ticket items strengthened, albeit only marginally.

Panelists surveyed for the LatinFocus Consensus Forecast see private consumption increasing 4.8% in 2021, which is down 0.9 percentage points from last month’s forecast. For 2022, panelists expect private consumption to expand 3.0%.
