Puerto Rico GDP per capita (USD) | Economic News & Forecasts

Puerto Rico - GDP per capita (U.S. Dollars)

While the economy seemingly returned to growth in the final quarter of FY 2021 (July 2020–June 2021) amid a region-leading vaccination campaign and the lifting of restrictions, available data for Q1 FY 2022 (July 2021–June 2022) now hints at a potential slowdown. Economic activity growth lost momentum in July, while retail sales slid to an eight-month low in August. More positively, although the manufacturing PMI averaged lower in Q1 FY 2022 compared to the previous quarter, it remained firmly in expansionary territory. Moreover, a noticeable drop in the unemployment rate in September could bolster private consumption. Lastly, backlash against the “Plan of Adjustment”—a bill that intends to authorize the sale of new bonds in an effort to restructure nearly USD 20 billion in debt—has already begun, with widespread protests and strikes slowly building up across the territory.
