South Africa: Inflation rises in August

Consumer prices increased 0.41% in August over the previous month, coming in below July's 1.08% increase. August’s slowdown was largely driven by softer growth in prices for housing and utilities.

Inflation came in at 4.9% in August, up from July’s 4.6%. Meanwhile, the trend pointed up slightly, with annual average inflation coming in at 3.8% in August (July: 3.7%). Lastly, core inflation ticked up to 3.1% in August, from July’s 3.0%.

FocusEconomics Consensus Forecast panelists see inflation averaging 4.3% in 2021, which is up 0.2 percentage points from last month’s estimate, and Error! Not a valid link.% in 2022.
