Netherlands: Consumer confidence remains in negative territory in January

Consumer confidence rose to minus 19.0 in January from December’s minus 20.0. January’s result marked the strongest reading since March 2020. However, the index still indicated pessimism among consumers.

The print came on the back of a marginal uptick in attitudes towards the general economic situation compared to the prior month. This came amid a slightly less pessimistic views on the economy in the year ahead, likely driven by positive news regarding Covid-19 vaccines and the rollout of a vaccination program. Meanwhile, willingness to buy remained unchanged despite improving views on households’ financial situation in the last and the next 12 months.
