Malaysia: Industrial output growth moderates in January

March 11, 2022

Industrial output increased 4.3% compared to the same month of the previous year in January, which was below December’s 5.9% increase. The upturn was largely due to a sharper drop in mining and quarrying production.

On a monthly basis, factory output fell 1.4% in seasonally-adjusted terms in January, which was below December’s 0.4% drop. In contrast, the trend improved, with the annual average growth of industrial production coming in at 7.5% in January, up from the prior month’s 7.2%.

FocusEconomics Consensus Forecast panelists expect industrial output to grow 6.1% in 2022, which is up 0.5 percentage points from last month’s forecast. For 2023, panelists expect industrial output to expand 4.6%.
