Indonesia: Inflation increases in April

Consumer prices increased 0.36% in April over the previous month, which was greater than the 0.17% rise tallied in March. April’s reading was driven by an increase in prices for transportation and communication services, as well as for prepared foods, beverages, and tobacco. In contrast, prices for foodstuffs decreased in April compared to the previous month.

Annual inflation increased from 6.4% in March to 6.8% in April. The reading was in line with market expectations. Annual average inflation held at March’s 6.1% in April. Meanwhile, the core inflation index, which excludes volatile items such as food and administered prices, increased 0.24% over the previous month (March: +0.29% month-on-month). Annual core inflation held steady at 5.0% for the fourth consecutive month.

The Central Bank’s inflation target for 2015 is 3.0%–5.0%. FocusEconomics Consensus Forecast panelists expect that inflation will average 6.5% in 2015, which is down 0.3 percentage points from last month’s forecast. For 2016, panelists see inflation averaging 4.8%.
