Guatemala: Inflation eases in July

Consumer prices fell 0.06% over the prior month in July, contrasting the 0.83% increase in June. The print reflected lower prices for alcoholic beverages; food; housing; furniture; and clothing. On the other hand, transportation and health costs rose higher in the month.

Inflation softened to 4.4% in July from 4.8% in June, moving more comfortably within the Central Bank’s 3.0%–5.0% target range. Annual average inflation, meanwhile, edged up to 4.1% in July from 3.9% in June.

Banguat expects inflation to end 2019 at 4.0% and 2020 at 4.3%. FocusEconomics panelists also see inflation ending 2019 at 4.0%, which was up 0.1 percentage points from the previous month’s forecast. For 2020, our panelists expected inflation to end the year at 3.9%.
