France: Inflation steady in October

November 14, 2018

On 14 November, the Statistical Institute (INSEE) reported that consumer prices rose 0.1% from a month earlier in October, contrasting a 0.2% month-on-month decrease in September. The rebound was driven by higher fuel and transport costs.

Inflation was confirmed at 2.2% in October, unchanged from September’s reading and undershooting analysts’ expectations amid falling prices for manufactured products. Regardless, annual average inflation ticked up to 1.8% from 1.7% in September.

Harmonized consumer prices grew 0.1% from a month earlier (September: -0.2% month-on-month), while harmonized inflation remained stable at 2.5%. Lastly, annual average harmonized inflation ticked up to 2.0% from 1.9% in September.

FocusEconomics Consensus Forecast panelists expect harmonized inflation to average 1.7% in 2019, which is unchanged from last month’s forecast. For 2020, panelists see harmonized inflation also averaging 1.7%.
