Colombia: Industrial sector swings back to contraction in June

August 14, 2019

Industrial production fell 1.1% over the same month of the last year in June, according to data released by the country’s National Administrative Department of Statistics (DANE) on 14 August. June’s drop contrasts a 3.2% year-on-year upturn in May.

A breakdown by industrial activity revealed that sharp contractions in the manufacture of other food products, other manufacturing industries, and sugar production were behind the downturn. These more than offset expansion in the production of beverages, and processing of milling products, starches and their derivatives.

Annual average growth in industrial production slid to 3.0% in June from 3.4% in May.

Panelists surveyed for this month’s LatinFocus report expect industrial production to expand 2.9% in 2019, which is unchanged from last month’s forecast. For 2020, the panel expects industrial production to also grow 3.0%.
