Korea: Consumer confidence improves in January

Consumer confidence jumped to 95.4 in January from December’s 91.2. As a result, the index moved closer to the 100-point threshold, but still indicated pessimism among consumers.

The uptick came despite lingering restrictions, with consumers’ views on the economy becoming significantly less pessimistic. Moreover, expectations regarding living standards, income and household spending improved. Notwithstanding the slight job loss in manufacturing in January according to PMI data, consumers’ views on employment also became less downbeat.
