Brazil: Inflation picks up in May from April
Latest reading: Consumer prices increased 4.7% on a year-on-year basis in May, following a 4.4% increase in the previous month. May’s reading was the strongest since September 2025.
Relative to the prior month’s figures, there were higher price pressures for food and beverages (+3.9% on a year-on-year basis vs +2.7% in April) and clothing (+4.6% vs +4.4% in April). In contrast, price pressures reduced for transportation in May (+4.1% vs +4.2% in April). Finally, the changes in education and housing and utilities were the same as in the prior month (+6.4% and +6.2%, respectively).
Meanwhile, core consumer prices increased 4.7% on a year-on-year basis in May, following a 4.6% rise in the prior month.
Finally, consumer prices were up 0.58% in May in month-on-month terms, following a 0.67% increase in the prior month.
