Montenegro - GDP per capita (Euros)

Available data for the third quarter suggests that the economic recovery continued at pace. Industrial output returned to growth on average in the quarter, following a marked contraction in Q2. A healthier external backdrop likely buoyed the sector, with merchandise exports continuing to grow at a solid pace in the period. Moreover, retail sales growth picked up notable steam in the quarter amid a tightening labor market, while stronger growth in goods imports further suggests firming domestic demand. Turning to Q4, the unemployment rate and inflation picked up in October, likely denting household spending somewhat. Moreover, tighter restrictions since mid-November also bode ill for activity in the final stretch of the year. Meanwhile, in late November the Council of Europe urged the government to increase its efforts to tackle money-laundering, which is weighing on EU accession ambitions.
