Energy prices increased 8.0% month on month in June, following May’s 1.4% fall.
After declining for four months, energy prices shot up in June at the quickest speed since March 2022, right on the heels of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. Prices rose for all the energy commodities in our report bar coking coal. That said, the increase largely reflects a rebound from recent multi-year lows, and was sparked by investor jitters about a full-blown Israel-Iran conflict that have since been put to bed—for now—after the two countries signed a ceasefire. In terms of fundamentals, developments remained largely bearish. OPEC+ continued to hike oil output, and the U.S. has so far failed to reach many large trade deals ahead of the 9 July deadline.
