Zambia - Exchange Rate (average of period)

The economy likely fell into recession in Q2 due to the Covid-19 fallout, after recently released GDP data revealed that output contracted in Q1 on a shrinking wholesale and retail trade sector. Domestically, containment measures likely hammered demand, while goods exports plunged in Q2. Turning to Q3, conditions are likely still downbeat. Although merchandise exports rebounded vigorously in July after nearly two full years of decline, the private sector PMI slipped in August and remained deep in contractionary mode—signaling that the recovery might be running out of steam. In other news, President Edgar Lungu abruptly fired Central Bank governor Denny Kalyalya in late August, raising concerns over central bank independence and uncertainty regarding talks with the IMF for a much-needed loan program.
