Exchange Rate in Zambia
Zambia - Exchange RateWeak economic conditions seem to have persisted into the second quarter. Exports continued to decline amid a grim trade environment, while the enforcement of a higher tax burden this year continued to weigh on mining activity. Going into Q3, exports fell at the sharpest pace in close to four years in July, spearheaded by lower overseas sales of copper, with reduced copper earnings reflecting a continued fall in prices. Furthermore, the worst drought in nearly four decades continued to impede agricultural and hydropower output, pushing up inflation to a near three-year high in July. Meanwhile, increasing fears of a debt crisis, spurred by liquidity challenges amid rising external debt servicing obligations and dwindling foreign exchange reserves, prompted S&P Global Ratings to downgrade the country’s credit rating further into junk territory to CCC+ from B- on 23 August.
