Yemen - GDP per capita (U.S. Dollars)Although the civil war rumbles on and the economy is still in tatters, some signs of progress have emerged in recent months. On the economic front, the government has resumed payments to many workers and pensioners, which coupled with donor funds has supported local purchasing power. Moreover, in politics, the UAE announced in July it was drawing down its troops in Yemen, raising hopes of an end to the conflict. Also in July, government representatives and the Houthis agreed new ceasefire measures in UN-mediated talks over withdrawal from the key port city of Hodeidah. Meanwhile, in a recent staff visit, the IMF praised the government for strengthening institutional capacity, but urged the resumption of all civil-service salary payments.
