Turkmenistan - External Debt

The economy seems to have expanded robustly in January–May. Growth was propelled by a buoyant hydrocarbon sector and merchandise export growth was also solid in the period, signaling firm demand for gas from overseas markets, namely China and Russia. Meanwhile, on the domestic side, a surge in retail sales buttressed by rising wages suggests private consumption was sturdy in the first five months of the year. In other news, the country is currently in talks with Russian state gas producer Gazprom over a potential medium-term deal for the company to purchase natural gas from Turkmenistan. The arrangement should help to further boost growth over the longer-term.
